Discover more about The Cathedral of Christ the Light

The Cathedral of Christ the Light, also known as Oakland Cathedral, serves as the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland. Completed in 2008, it replaced the Cathedral of Saint Francis de Sales, which was irreparably damaged in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. Designed by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, the cathedral is the first to be built entirely in the 21st century and stands as a captivating example of modern religious architecture. The cathedral's design is rooted in the shape of the vesica piscis, formed by the intersection of two circles. This shape influences the building's footprint and the design of the Alpha and Omega windows. The structure is made of glass and Douglas fir, allowing natural light to permeate the interior. The ceiling, known as the Oculus, features 140 angled aluminum panels that diffuse light, creating a serene atmosphere. The 58-foot Omega window displays an image of Christ, derived from a sculpture at Chartres Cathedral, created with thousands of perforations in the aluminum panels. The cathedral complex includes side chapels, a baptistery, a mausoleum, a conference center, and a public plaza with gardens designed by Peter Walker and Partners. The mausoleum provides burial sites for the bishops of Oakland and members of the diocese. A healing garden offers a space for survivors of clergy sexual abuse. The building incorporates sustainable design strategies, including the use of recycled materials and natural lighting. The structure also features a base isolation system to withstand earthquake damage.
