Getting There

Driving

From Highway 1, exit onto Pier Avenue in Oceano. Drive west on Pier Avenue until you reach the entrance kiosks at the beach. Be prepared to pay the vehicle day use fee of $5. If you plan to camp, reservations are highly recommended. Note that the Arroyo Grande Creek crosses the beach and may be too deep to cross at times, especially around high tide. Check local tide information before arriving. Parking is available on the beach, but four-wheel drive is recommended.
Public Transport

The San Luis Obispo Regional Transit Authority (SLORTA) offers bus service to Oceano. Take Route 27 or 28 to the Oceano Airport stop, which is approximately a 10-minute walk to the beach. From there, walk west on Pier Avenue to access the Oceano Dunes SVRA entrance. A single ride on SLORTA costs around $2.

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) is a thrilling and unique destination on California's Central Coast, offering a blend of natural beauty and motorized recreation. As the only California State Park where vehicles can drive directly on the beach, it attracts visitors from across the United States. The SVRA encompasses approximately 3,600 acres, with around 1,000 acres open to off-highway vehicle (OHV) recreation. This expansive area is part of the larger Guadalupe-Nipomo dune complex, one of the largest remaining dune ecosystems in California. The dunes themselves are formed by sediment from the Santa Maria River and Pismo Creek, sculpted by winds, tides, and currents. Historically, the area was home to the Chumash people, who thrived on the abundant resources of the coast. Shell middens, remnants of their settlements, can still be found within the dunes. Later, Spanish explorers passed through the area, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, land speculators arrived, drawn by the promise of the "Atlantic City of the West". For over 100 years, the Guadalupe-Nipomo dunes have been used for off-highway vehicle use. Today, Oceano Dunes SVRA offers a wide range of activities. Visitors can drive on the beach (4-wheel drive recommended), surf, swim, fish, hike, and camp. The park is open daily for vehicle day use from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Primitive beach and dune camping are available, but reservations are highly recommended. The Oceano Dunes Visitor Center offers engaging exhibits about local plant and animal species, cultural history, and off-highway vehicles. While the SVRA is known for its OHV recreation, it's important to note that certain areas are fenced off to protect sensitive plant and animal life. Additionally, access to the OHV and camping area may be restricted due to the depth of Arroyo Grande Creek, which flows across the beach.
