Discover more about Palm Theatre - Home of the SLO Film Center

The Palm Theatre, situated in the heart of San Luis Obispo's historic Chinatown, has been a cultural cornerstone since 1988. Founded by Jim and Patty Dee, the theater emerged from their earlier venture, The Rainbow, San Luis Obispo's first art house cinema. The Palm quickly became a haven for independent, foreign, and arthouse films, offering an alternative to mainstream multiplexes. The building itself has an interesting history, originally constructed in 1955 as an Employment Development Department. Its conversion into a movie theater presented unique challenges, resulting in an unorthodox layout with three separate projection rooms. In 2004, the Palm became the first solar-powered movie theater in the United States, showcasing its commitment to environmental sustainability. In 2024, the Palm Theatre transitioned into the SLO Film Center, a non-profit hub for independent films, guest speakers, and regularly scheduled movies. This collaboration with the San Luis Obispo International Film Festival ensures the Palm's legacy as a cultural epicenter for years to come. The SLO Film Center hosts a variety of events, including film festivals, themed nights, and Q&A sessions with filmmakers. The Palm Theatre offers an intimate and community-focused movie-going experience. With a seating capacity of 268 across three screens, the theater provides a cozy setting to enjoy thought-provoking cinema. The Palm is committed to accessibility, offering wheelchair spaces, accessible restrooms, and devices for closed captioning and audio description.
