The plaza is located at the base of the historic Pismo Beach Pier, providing breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. The plaza features a reconfigured parking lot that doubles the public space, decorative concrete pavers and planter areas, new site furnishings, artwork, shade structures, and whimsical amenities promoting play. A highlight is the Whale Surfing Playground, designed by Danish architect Monstrum, which includes a massive Humpback Whale, Clam slide, and surfboards for climbing. The playground's marine life theme is inspired by the local environment. Other improvements include accessible beach access, a dedicated Airstream section on the Pier for local businesses and restaurants, and a new restroom. The plaza also features an illuminated, seven-foot-tall "Pismo Beach" sign, perfect for photo opportunities. The Pismo Beach Conference and Visitors Bureau operates a Visitor Information Airstream on the pier, providing information on lodging, dining, and activities. The pier itself has a rich history, dating back to 1881 when it was built as the Pismo Wharf. It has undergone several reconstructions due to storm damage, most recently in 2018. Today, the 1,200-foot pier is a popular spot for fishing, surfing, and strolling.
