Discover more about San Francisco Zoo

Spanning 100 acres, the San Francisco Zoo & Gardens is more than just a place to see animals; it's an urban oasis dedicated to conservation, education, and connecting people with wildlife. Originally established as the Herbert Fleishhacker Zoo in 1929, its early exhibits, including Monkey Island, the Lion House, and the Elephant House, were innovative for their time, featuring bar-less enclosures. The San Francisco Zoological Society, founded in 1954, has played a vital role in the zoo's development, supporting conservation efforts and exhibit renovations. Today, the zoo is divided into different themed regions, such as the African Region, with the Leanne B. Roberts African Savanna, the Jones Family Gorilla Preserve, and the Lipman Family Lemur Forest. Cat Kingdom, Bear Country, and Penguin Island are also popular with visitors. The South American Tropical Rainforest and Aviary offers an immersive experience, while the Exploration Zone provides educational fun for children. The zoo is actively involved in conservation programs, including Species Survival Plans, working to protect species ranging from Madagascan radiated tortoises to black rhinos and gorillas. It also participates in local conservation efforts, such as the reintroduction of the endangered Yosemite toad to Yosemite National Park.
