Discover more about Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park Redwood Gate

Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, a 1,833-acre haven in the East Bay hills, offers a tranquil escape into a world of towering redwoods. Just a few miles over the ridge from downtown Oakland, this park provides a stunning natural contrast to the urban landscape. While the redwoods here are not the old-growth giants of the distant past, these second and third-growth trees, many over a century old, create an impressive and peaceful forest. Once the site of extensive logging in the mid-1800s to supply building materials for the burgeoning San Francisco Bay Area, the park has since been reclaimed by nature. Today, visitors can wander along nearly 40 miles of trails, immersing themselves in the cool, shaded environment beneath the redwood canopy. The park's diverse terrain also includes evergreens, chaparral, and grasslands, providing habitat for a variety of wildlife, including deer, raccoons, and the occasional golden eagle. The park was renamed in 2019 to honor Dr. Aurelia Henry Reinhardt, president of Mills College and a key figure in the East Bay Regional Park District's early days. Reinhardt was a strong advocate for redwood preservation and public open space, leaving a lasting legacy on the region. Visitors can enjoy a range of activities, including hiking, jogging, horseback riding, and picnicking. Several staging areas provide access to different parts of the park, each offering its own unique experience. The Stream Trail is a popular, easy option that leads directly into a beautiful redwood grove. For a more challenging hike, explore the French, Tres Sendas, or Redwood Peak Trails.
