Discover more about Spanish Village Art Center

Nestled in the heart of Balboa Park, the Spanish Village Art Center offers a vibrant and colorful escape into the world of art. Originally constructed for the 1935 California Pacific International Exposition, the village was designed by architect Richard Requa to evoke the charm of an old Spanish village. It was nearly demolished after the exposition, but painter and photographer Sherman Trease advocated for its conversion into an artist community. Today, the Spanish Village Art Center is home to over 200 local artists who work in 38 studios, showcasing a diverse range of artistic styles and mediums. Visitors can explore the studios, watch artists at work, and purchase unique, handcrafted pieces. The colorful courtyard, adorned with painted tiles and flowers, provides a picturesque setting for art lovers and casual visitors alike. The village has a rich history, serving as a station for the US Army during World War II before being reclaimed by artists in 1947. In the 1980s, artists collaborated to paint the tiles in the courtyard, adding to the village's unique character. The Spanish Village Art Center hosts various events, workshops, and demonstrations throughout the year, making it a dynamic and engaging destination for art enthusiasts of all ages.
