Discover more about San Mateo Central Park

San Mateo Central Park, a 16.5-acre urban oasis, has been a focal point of community life since its establishment in 1922. Originally the estate of Charles B. Polhemus and later William Kohl, the land was purchased by the city for $80,000 to create its first public park. Today, the park is bordered by El Camino Real, 5th Avenue, Laurel Avenue, and 9th Avenue, offering a green escape in the heart of San Mateo. Central Park boasts a variety of attractions. The Japanese Garden, designed by Nagao Sakurai, features a granite pagoda, tea house, koi pond, and bamboo grove. It was installed in 1966 as a gift from Toyonaka, San Mateo's sister city, and symbolizes harmony and cultural appreciation. The San Mateo Arboretum and Rose Garden provide a beautiful setting for leisurely strolls, with the Kohl pumphouse serving as the Arboretum Society's meeting place. Sports enthusiasts can enjoy the baseball field, one of the park's original features, and the tennis courts. A playground offers fun for children. Throughout the year, Central Park hosts community events such as the Central Park Music Series and Eggstravaganza. While the miniature train is currently undergoing restoration, it remains a cherished amenity. The park also features sculptures and historic structures, including an Italian-made cast-iron dog statue that has been a beloved landmark for generations. The recreation center is leased by Self-Help for the Elderly, providing activities for senior citizens.
