Discover more about Conservatory of Flowers

The Conservatory of Flowers, a captivating oasis nestled in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, invites visitors to explore a world of rare and exotic plants within its elegant Victorian walls. Completed in 1879, it stands as the oldest building in the park and one of the first municipal conservatories in the United States. This architectural marvel, constructed primarily of wood, showcases a stunning array of flora from tropical rainforests to cloud forests, offering a unique glimpse into diverse ecosystems. Originally conceived by wealthy businessman James Lick, the conservatory's parts were acquired for his San Jose estate. After his death, prominent San Franciscans purchased the materials and gifted them to the city. Over the years, the Conservatory has faced numerous challenges, including fires, earthquakes, and a devastating windstorm in 1995 that shattered much of its glass. However, through dedicated restoration efforts, it has been lovingly preserved and continues to enchant visitors with its beauty and botanical treasures. Inside, five distinct galleries transport you to different corners of the globe. Marvel at the towering tropical plants in the Lowland Tropics gallery, discover the unique adaptations of plants in the Highland Tropics gallery, and admire the vibrant colors of the Aquatic Plants gallery. The Potted Plants gallery showcases a rotating display of seasonal blooms, while the Special Exhibits gallery features themed displays throughout the year. Don't miss the nightly light show, 'Photosynthesis: Love for All Seasons,' which illuminates the building's exterior with colorful visuals and music.
