Discover more about San Francisco Cable Car Museum

The San Francisco Cable Car Museum, located in the Nob Hill neighborhood, offers a fascinating look into the history and mechanics of the city's world-famous cable car system. Housed in the historic Washington-Mason cable car barn and powerhouse, the museum provides a unique perspective on this iconic transportation mode. Inside, you'll find several preserved cable cars dating back to the 1870s, including the Clay Street Hill Railroad grip car No. 8, the only surviving car from the first cable car company. Exhibits showcase the evolution of the cable car, from its invention to its expansion and near demise, and eventual restoration. Visitors can also view the large cavern where the haulage cables are routed. The museum is part of the complex that houses the cable car powerhouse, which drives the cables. Two galleries allow visitors to view the powerhouse from above and descend below the junction of Washington and Mason streets to see the cables moving underground. The museum opened in 1974 and is run by the Friends of the Cable Car Museum, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving cable car history. Admission is free.
