Discover more about Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve

Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve offers a unique glimpse into the natural beauty of the San Francisco Peninsula. This 467-acre park is famous for its vibrant spring wildflower displays, attracting visitors from all over the region. The park's diverse habitats include grasslands, oak woodlands, chaparral, and wetlands, creating a rich tapestry of plant and animal life. The park's unique geology plays a crucial role in its biodiversity. The presence of serpentine soil, formed millions of years ago by the convergence of tectonic plates, creates a challenging environment for plants. However, many native species have adapted to these conditions, resulting in a stunning array of wildflowers each spring. These include California poppies, owl's clover, and the rare San Mateo thornmint, found only at Edgewood. Edgewood's history is also fascinating. The land was once considered for various development projects, including a golf course. However, thanks to the efforts of conservation-minded citizens and organizations like the Friends of Edgewood, the park was preserved as a natural preserve in 1993. Today, visitors can explore over 10 miles of trails, enjoy panoramic views, and learn about the park's unique ecology at the Bill and Jean Lane Education Center. Keep an eye out for the endangered Bay Checkerspot Butterfly, too ! Whether you're a seasoned hiker, a wildflower enthusiast, or simply looking for a peaceful escape, Edgewood Park & Natural Preserve offers something for everyone. Remember to check the Friends of Edgewood website for guided wildflower walks and to stay updated on trail conditions.
