Local know-how to help you travel smarter and make the most of every moment.
Hiking
From the Giant Forest area of Sequoia National Park, start at the Giant Forest Museum. Follow the well-marked Congress Trail, which begins right next to the museum. Hike approximately 1.5 miles on this trail until you reach the intersection with the High Sierra Trail. Here, you will see signs directing you to various points of interest, including Stagg Tree. Continue along the Congress Trail, which will lead you through stunning groves of giant sequoias. After about 0.5 miles, look for a small unmarked trail that leads off to the left towards Stagg Tree. This trail is less traveled, so be cautious of your footing as it winds through the forest. Follow this path for about 0.3 miles, and you will arrive at Stagg Tree, one of the largest trees in the park.
Guided Tour
If you prefer a guided experience, check with the visitor center in the Giant Forest area for scheduled ranger-led programs that include a visit to Stagg Tree. These tours typically depart from the Giant Forest Museum and provide educational insights along the way. Ensure to wear comfortable hiking shoes and carry water. The ranger will lead you through the Congress Trail and to Stagg Tree, enriching your experience with information about the flora and fauna of the area.
Backpacking
For those experienced in backcountry hiking, you can start your journey from the Lodgepole Campground. Begin on the Twin Lakes Trail, which connects to the High Sierra Trail. After hiking for about 3 miles, take the junction towards the Congress Trail. This route is longer but allows for a more secluded experience. As you hike, enjoy the breathtaking views of the Sierra Nevada mountains and diverse wildlife before reaching the Congress Trail. From there, follow the Congress Trail to Stagg Tree.
