Discover more about Horseshoe Falls of Canada

Horseshoe Falls is the centerpiece of Niagara Falls, a natural wonder formed approximately 12,000 years ago during the last ice age. As glaciers melted, the immense force of the water carved out the Niagara Gorge, creating the dramatic escarpment over which the Niagara River plunges. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls is known as the Horseshoe Falls because of its distinctive shape. With a height of 188 feet (57 meters) and a crest line spanning approximately 2,200 feet (670 meters), Horseshoe Falls commands attention with its sheer scale. Approximately 90% of the Niagara River flows over its brink, creating a mesmerizing spectacle of cascading water and swirling mist. The depth of the river at the base of the Falls is 184 feet (56 meters). Visitors can experience the falls from various vantage points, including observation decks like Table Rock Centre, which is located right next to the Falls, and boat tours such as Niagara City Cruises, which venture into the very heart of the mist. Over the centuries, erosion has been a constant force, causing the falls to retreat approximately 1 foot (0.3 meters) per year. Engineering efforts have been undertaken to control the erosion and maintain the falls' majestic appearance. The appeal of Niagara Falls extends beyond its visual grandeur. It has become a popular destination for honeymooners and families alike.
