Discover more about Place Jean-Pelletier

Place Jean-Pelletier, located in the heart of Québec City, is a serene park that offers a delightful escape from the bustling city streets. Situated directly in front of the Gare du Palais, the city's central train station, the park provides a welcoming green space for visitors and locals alike. The park's history is as rich and varied as the city itself. The area was once the site of the Port Saint-Nicolas, followed by the King's Naval Shipyard, and later the Saint-Paul Market. After the construction of the current Gare du Palais in 1915, the space was used as a parking lot before being transformed into a park in 1998. In 2014, it was renamed Place Jean-Pelletier to honor Jean Pelletier, who served as mayor of Québec City from 1977 to 1989 and was instrumental in revitalizing the Old Port and Saint-Roch sectors. Today, Place Jean-Pelletier is divided into two main sections: a grassy area facing the train station and a more wooded area closer to the Édifice de la Santé et du Bien-être social. The park is adorned with floral arrangements, benches, and public art, including the Éclatement II fountain by Charles Daudelin and the Rêver le Nouveau Monde installation by Michel Goulet. Éclatement II is a sister fountain to Daudelin's Embâcle fountain in Paris, symbolically linking the capitals of French-speaking communities worldwide. Rêver le Nouveau Monde features 40 chairs inscribed with texts by Québécois writers, connected by a representation of the St. Lawrence River between Québec and Montréal. Open daily from 8 AM to 11 PM, Place Jean-Pelletier is a popular spot for relaxation, picnics, and community events. Its central location and proximity to the train station make it easily accessible, inviting visitors to unwind and enjoy the tranquility amidst the historic backdrop of Québec City.
