Discover more about Ventisquero San Rafael

Ventisquero San Rafael, located within the Parque Nacional Laguna San Rafael, is a majestic glacier that descends from the Campo de Hielo Norte (Northern Patagonian Ice Field). This impressive glacier is renowned for its vibrant blue colors and the massive icebergs that calve from its face into the serene waters of the San Rafael Lagoon. The lagoon, despite its name, is actually an ocean inlet with low salinity due to the melting ice. The glacier itself is approximately 45 km long and its ice wall rises about 30 meters above the water. The constant cracking and groaning of the ice, as it calves, creates a thunderous spectacle. These icebergs then drift across the lagoon, eventually making their way out to sea. Boat tours provide the most common access to the glacier, allowing visitors to witness the grandeur of the ice formations up close. Some tours even offer whiskey chilled with ancient glacial ice. Ventisquero San Rafael has a rich history, with the first European visitor being the Spaniard Bartolomé Díaz Gallardo. Jesuit missionaries followed in the 18th century, bestowing its current name. The glacier advanced noticeably during the 19th century, reaching its maximum Little Ice Age position around 1875. Sadly, like many glaciers worldwide, Ventisquero San Rafael has been in continuous retreat since 1960 and is considered a casualty of global warming.
