Discover more about Valparaiso Cultural Park

Valparaíso Cultural Park (PCdV) is an architectural complex built on Cerro Cárcel, on the site of the city's former public prison. This transformation has created a unique space where art, history, and community converge. The park features three buildings spanning 10,000 m2, set within 2.5 hectares of open space. The site's history is palpable. From 1807 to 1810, the Spanish constructed a gunpowder magazine (Polvorín) here for defense during the Napoleonic Wars. However, it was never used for that purpose. In the mid-1840s, the site became Valparaíso's prison, replacing the old one in Cerro Cordillera. The 1906 earthquake damaged the structures, leading to the construction of a new cell block made of iron and cement. The prison operated until 1999, after which artists and community members began repurposing the space for cultural activities. In 2010, as part of a "Bicentenario Plan," a national architecture contest led to the design of the current park. Today, PCdV serves as a cultural, artistic, and social hub. The old cell block has been preserved and adapted for artistic displays. Visitors can explore exhibitions of contemporary and traditional Chilean art, view murals in the old exercise yards, and attend live theater and dance performances. The park also offers classes, workshops, and community events. The grounds provide green areas, recreation spaces, and stunning panoramic views of Valparaíso's hills and bay.
