Discover more about piedra el peñol

Piedra del Peñol, also known as the Rock of Guatapé, is a towering granite monolith that rises 220 meters (755 feet) above the scenic landscape of Guatapé, Colombia. Believed to have formed during the Precambrian era, the rock is a remnant of the Antioquia Batholith, a vast geological formation. Over millions of years, erosion shaped the landscape, leaving behind this impressive monolith. For the indigenous Tahamí people, the rock was a sacred site of worship. In more recent history, locals Luis Eduardo Villegas López, Ramón Díaz, and Pedro Nel Ramírez completed the first recorded ascent in 1954, using sticks wedged into the rock's fissure. Today, a winding 708-step staircase allows visitors to easily reach the top. At the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Guatapé Reservoir, a man-made lake created in the 20th century as part of a hydroelectric project. The lake's many islands, once rolling hills, create a unique and stunning vista. Enjoy refreshments and local crafts at the top while soaking in one of Colombia's most spectacular views.
