Driving
To reach Escape Dunes, start at the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center. From the Visitor Center, drive south on Highway 150. The Sand Ramp Trailhead, which provides access to Escape Dunes, is located a few miles south of the visitor center. Look for signs indicating the trailhead and backcountry camping area. Parking is available at the trailhead. Note that a backcountry permit is required for overnight camping. The entrance fee for the park is $25 per vehicle.

Hiking
From the Sand Ramp Trailhead, follow the Sand Ramp Trail into the backcountry. The trail is well-marked and relatively easy to follow. Escape Dunes campsites are located along the trail, within 50 feet of metal arrowhead posts. The hike to the campsites is relatively short, but be prepared for some elevation gain. The distance to the campsites varies depending on which site you choose. Remember to pack plenty of water and be prepared for changing weather conditions.
