Getting There

  • Driving

    From the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center, drive north on the main park road for approximately one mile. The campground entrance will be on your left. Follow the signs to your reserved campsite. Parking is available at each individual site. Be aware that during peak season, traffic can be heavy, especially on weekends.

  • Walking

    From the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center, follow the Wellington Ditch Trail north. This trail connects to the campground. The walk is approximately one mile and offers scenic views of the dunes and surrounding landscape. Be sure to wear appropriate footwear and bring water, as the trail can be exposed to the sun.

Piñon Flats Campground, located one mile north of the Great Sand Dunes Visitor Center, is the only developed campground within the national park. Situated at 8,175 feet, the campground is nestled among piñon pines and sagebrush, offering stunning views of the dunes and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The campground has 88 campsites, including individual and group sites, all of which require reservations made through Recreation.gov. Campsites book up quickly, especially during the peak summer months, so it's recommended to book well in advance. Each campsite is equipped with a fire grate, picnic table, and bear locker for safe food storage. Restrooms with flush toilets, sinks, dishwashing sinks, and potable water spigots are available in all three loops. There are no showers in the campground, but outdoor rinse showers are available at the Dunes Parking Lot during the summer. From the campground, visitors can easily access the dunes via a short walk. Other nearby attractions include the Mosca Pass Trail, the Dunes Overlook Trail, and the Medano Pass Primitive Road, a 22-mile backcountry road requiring a high-clearance 4WD vehicle. Piñon Flats provides a comfortable and convenient base for exploring the diverse landscapes and recreational opportunities of Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve.
