The Wellington Ditch Trail is a gentle, mostly level path located within the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in south-central Colorado. This easy trail stretches for approximately one mile, connecting the Montville Nature Trail to the Pinyon Flats Campground. The trail's namesake comes from an irrigation ditch dug in 1927 by the Wellington family to transport water from Mosca Creek to Buck Creek. As you meander along the trail, you'll be treated to views of the Great Sand Dunes and the towering peaks of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The landscape features a mix of scrubby piñon pine, rocky mountain juniper, prickly pear cactus, and yucca. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including elk, deer, rabbits, squirrels, chipmunks, and various bird species.
