Established in 1999, the NCA is managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and is characterized by its dramatic double canyon system carved by the Gunnison River. The NCA's landscape ranges from adobe badlands to rugged pinyon and juniper-covered slopes. At its heart lies the Gunnison Gorge Wilderness, spanning 17,700 acres. This wilderness area is renowned for its world-class trout fishing and challenging whitewater boating opportunities. The Gunnison River boasts over 300 pounds of fish per acre and 10,000 brown trout per mile, making it a prime destination for anglers. The NCA offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, camping, and off-highway vehicle (OHV) riding. In addition to its daytime attractions, the Gunnison Gorge NCA is known for its exceptionally dark skies and excellent air quality. Designated as an International Dark Sky Park, the NCA offers stunning stargazing opportunities. The absence of electrical service ensures no permanent artificial lighting, contributing to the area's dark sky quality.
