  • Driving

    From Trinidad, Colorado, head northeast on Highway 12 for approximately 35 miles. The North Lake State Wildlife Area will be on your left, with designated parking areas available. Be aware that Highway 12 is also known as the Highway of Legends, a scenic byway. Ensure you have a valid Colorado fishing, hunting, or State Wildlife Area pass if you are over 16. There are no fees for parking.

North Lake State Wildlife Area, located along the Highway of Legends (State Highway 12) in Las Animas County, Colorado, is a scenic mountain getaway. Encompassing 840 acres in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the area ranges in elevation from 8,478 to 9,905 feet. The centerpiece is North Lake Reservoir, created in 1907 to supply water to Trinidad. Anglers will find excellent cold-water lake and stream fishing opportunities. The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Department stocks North Lake with brown, rainbow, and cutthroat trout, as well as splake and kokanee salmon. Fishing is permitted from the shore or on the lake, and ice fishing is popular in winter. Note that fishing is restricted to artificial flies and lures only. Beyond fishing, the area offers hiking trails, birding, and wildlife viewing. Birders can explore high-elevation habitats and spot various species, including American Dippers and owls. The area is also home to black bears, deer, elk, porcupines, and minks. Boating is allowed for hand-propelled, wind-powered, or electric motor boats; gas-powered motors are prohibited. Picnic tables and restrooms are available. To visit North Lake State Wildlife Area, a valid Colorado fishing, hunting, or public land license is required for everyone over the age of 16. Camping is not permitted within the SWA, but the Purgatoire Campground, operated by the US Forest Service, is located just outside the western border and offers reservable campsites for a fee.
