Discover more about Colorado Panorama: A People’s History

Located on the southeast side of the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, 'Colorado Panorama: A People's History' is a large-scale public art mural that offers a visual journey through the state's history. Created in 1989 by artist Barbara Jo Revelle, the mural serves as a tribute to the diverse individuals who have contributed to Colorado's story, including those often overlooked in traditional historical accounts. The mural stretches for two blocks and is composed of 300,000 computer-generated porcelain tiles. It features 169 figures, with an equal representation of 84 men and 84 women, encompassing a wide range of people such as athletes, politicians, African and Native American leaders, farmers, activists, and rebels. The figures include well-known names like Nikola Tesla, Molly Brown, and Buffalo Bill Cody, as well as lesser-known but influential figures like Emily Griffith and Ann Evans. The inclusion of controversial historical figures, such as Black Panthers, labor activists, and Kit Carson, sparked debate upon its completion. Revelle stated that the piece was 'an attempt to represent history, not whitewash it'. While the mural initially lacked an official key to identify the figures, students of CU History professor Dr. Tom Noel created a provisional key in 1996. This key, available at the Convention Center's offices, provides names and brief descriptions of each individual featured in the artwork.
