Discover more about Historic Arkansas Riverwalk

The Historic Arkansas Riverwalk of Pueblo (HARP) is a testament to the city's resilience and revitalization. This 32-acre urban waterfront has transformed a once-neglected area into a vibrant hub of recreation, history, and economic growth. The Riverwalk marks the return of the Arkansas River to its historic location in the heart of downtown Pueblo, after being diverted in the 1920s due to a devastating flood in 1921 that destroyed much of the city. Inspired by the San Antonio Riverwalk, the project began in 1991 with the goal of beautifying the city, attracting tourists, and boosting the local economy. The HARP Commission was created in 1993 to design and fund the project, which officially opened to the public on October 6, 2000. Since then, additions like the Gateway Park and the Veterans Bridge have enhanced its appeal. Today, the Riverwalk offers a mile-long channel to explore art and history, with excursion boats providing a unique perspective on the Pueblo Flood of 1921. Visitors can stroll along the pathways, enjoy public art installations, interactive fountains, and relax in shaded seating areas. The Riverwalk also hosts live music, art festivals, and farmers' markets, making it a hub for cultural and community events. Historical interpretive signs add an interesting perspective. The Arkansas River has been central to Pueblo for over 300 years, attracting Native Americans, early settlers, and industries. The Riverwalk's revitalization has been vital in attracting new businesses and stabilizing the city's economic base.
