Getting There

  • Driving

    From Dolores, travel west on State Highway 145, then turn west (right) onto State Highway 184. Continue for approximately 1 mile; the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum will be on your right. From Cortez, travel north on State Highway 145, then turn west (left) on State Highway 184. Most roads within the monument are unpaved and can be rough. Check road conditions before heading out. Parking is available at the Visitor Center and at trailheads. RV parking is available at the Visitor Center, Lowry Pueblo, and the Sand Canyon trailheads. There is no fee to access the monument itself. However, there is a $7 fee per adult to enter the museum. Individuals 16 and under, tribal members, and holders of the America the Beautiful Pass are admitted free.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument, managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), encompasses over 176,000 acres in the Four Corners region of southwestern Colorado. Established in 2000, the monument protects an extraordinary cultural landscape with the highest known density of archaeological sites in the United States. It's estimated to contain between 20,000 and 30,000 sites, with over 8,400 documented to date. These sites offer a window into over 10,000 years of human history, primarily shaped by Ancestral Puebloan cultures. The monument features villages, kivas, cliff dwellings, petroglyphs, and ancient roadways. Some areas have as many as 40 sites per square mile. Thirteen archaeological sites have been stabilized and preserved for visitation. Visitors can explore several accessible sites, including Escalante Pueblo, a short walk from the Visitor Center, Lowry Pueblo, and Painted Hand Pueblo. The Sand Canyon Trail offers a chance to hike among cliff dwellings. The Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center and Museum in Dolores serves as the monument's headquarters and features exhibits about Ancestral Puebloan life and local archaeology. The monument is a living landscape used today for recreation, hunting, livestock grazing, and energy development. Visitors are encouraged to respect the cultural resources and practice Leave No Trace principles.
