  • Driving

    The Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center & Museum is located at 27501 CO-184, Dolores, CO 81323. From Dolores, head east on CO-184; the visitor center will be on your left. From Cortez, take US-491 N to CO-184 E in Dolores. Continue on CO-184 for approximately 7 miles. Parking is available in the paved lot at the visitor center. There are about 50 parking spaces, including accessible spaces. Parking is free.

    If you are staying in Dolores, you can walk to the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center & Museum. Head east on CO-184. The visitor center is approximately 3 miles from the center of Dolores and will be on your left. The walk may take around an hour.

Located at the foot of the San Juan Mountains, the Canyons of the Ancients Visitor Center & Museum is the ideal starting point for exploring the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The museum features interactive galleries and authentic cultural objects, showcasing a portion of the facility's impressive 3 million artifacts and records. Visitors can explore exhibits detailing the history and culture of the Ancestral Puebloans, as well as those of historic Pueblo, Ute, Navajo, and Anglo settlers. The museum also offers insights into archaeological fieldwork and laboratory research. Interactive exhibits allow visitors to weave on a loom, grind corn, examine artifacts through microscopes, and feel the finger indentations on corrugated pottery. A highlight is the replica pithouse, which shows how a typical Puebloan household would have been furnished. Outside the museum, a paved half-mile trail leads to the Dominguez and Escalante Pueblos, offering panoramic views and interpretive signage. The Escalante Pueblo, constructed around 1120-1130 AD, features stone-walled family and communal rooms, including kivas, reminiscent of the architecture of Chaco Canyon. Nearby, the Dominguez Pueblo provides an example of independent family homes outside the main pueblo.
