Discover more about Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad

The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad offers a unique journey into the past, traversing the same route it has for over a century. Originally built to haul silver and gold ore from the San Juan Mountains, the railway now serves as a major tourist attraction, transporting passengers through the rugged wilderness between Durango and Silverton. The railway's construction in 1881-1882 was an ambitious feat of engineering, with tracks carved into the steep Animas Canyon. The narrow gauge, with rails only three feet apart, allowed the train to navigate the tight turns and challenging terrain. The route spans 45 miles, climbing nearly 2,800 feet to Silverton, a historic mining town that feels like stepping back in time. Today, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad operates year-round, offering various train excursions. Passengers can choose from different classes of service, including options with open-air gondolas for immersive views. The experience includes a layover in Silverton, where visitors can explore the town's historic buildings, shops, and restaurants. Back in Durango, don't miss the free D&S Roundhouse Museum, which showcases artifacts and exhibits about Colorado's railroading and mining history.
