Discover more about J. Hood Wright Park

J. Hood Wright Park, a 6.7-acre haven in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, offers a refreshing escape from the urban environment. Located between 173rd and 176th Streets, from Fort Washington Avenue to Haven Avenue, the park provides green space and recreational facilities for the community and visitors alike. Named for J. Hood Wright (1836-1894), a wealthy banker and philanthropist who once owned the land, the park reflects his commitment to the neighborhood. Wright, who lived in a mansion near the park's location, contributed to the Washington Heights Branch of the New York Public Library, ensuring it became a free library in 1883. The City of New York acquired the land in 1925 to create a much-needed park and playground for the area. Today, J. Hood Wright Park features a variety of amenities, including basketball, handball and volleyball courts, fitness equipment, a multi-purpose field, a dog-friendly area, and a recreation center. The park also boasts scenic views of the Hudson River and the George Washington Bridge. A unique art installation, the "3000 A.D. Diffusion Piece" by Terry Fugate-Wilcox, adds a modern touch to the landscape.
