Discover more about Kiehl's Since 1851

Kiehl's Since 1851, located at 109 3rd Avenue in New York City's vibrant East Village, is more than just a cosmetics store; it's a journey through time. Founded as an old-world apothecary by John Kiehl, the store has been serving patrons with homeopathic and herbal remedies since 1851. The corner of 13th Street and Third Avenue, where Kiehl's stands, is known as "Pear Tree Corner," named after a pear tree planted in 1667 by Peter Stuyvesant. In 1921, Irving Morse, a former apprentice, took over the business, expanding its offerings to include teas, herbs, and the first-ever Kiehl's brand products, including the Original Musk Oil. His son, Aaron Morse, transitioned the store from traditional pharmaceuticals to skincare lines, gaining international recognition in the 1980s. Aaron also introduced Mr. Bones, a human skeleton, as a mascot to encourage people to learn about their bodies. Today, Kiehl's flagship store maintains its old-world pharmacy feel, with apothecary drawers and cabinets showcasing the company's dedication to service, science, and the environment. The store offers personalized skincare consultations and generous samples, allowing customers to experience the brand's unique blend of pharmaceutical, herbal, and dermatological expertise. The brand is known for listing ingredients on product labels since 1924, even before it was mandated. In 2022, the original store was revamped to celebrate its history. The store's interior is filled with curiosities, including family photos, vintage motorcycles, and pictures of Olympic skiers and fighter airplanes.
