Discover more about Our Lady of Pompeii Church

Our Lady of Pompeii Church, situated at 25 Carmine Street in New York City's vibrant Greenwich Village, is more than just a place of worship; it's a living monument to the Italian-American experience. Founded in 1892 by Father Pietro Bandini, the church began as a chapel for the St. Raphael Society, an organization dedicated to protecting Italian immigrants from exploitation and assisting them in assimilating to American society. Initially located in a rented building on Sullivan Street, the parish moved to Bleecker Street before settling at its present location. The current church, designed by Italian-American architect Matthew Del Gaudio, was completed in 1928 in the Romanesque Revival style, reminiscent of churches in Italy. Its architecture was intentionally chosen to distinguish it from other nearby Protestant and Irish Catholic churches. The interior features depictions of the Glorious Mysteries on the ceiling and a marble reredos containing a replica of the painting from the Shrine of Our Lady of the Rosary of Pompei in Italy. Over the years, Our Lady of Pompeii has remained a vital center for the Italian-American community, offering masses in Italian and celebrating cultural events. The church also houses a shrine to Mother Cabrini, the patron saint of immigrants, and statues of various other saints, reflecting the diverse devotional practices of its parishioners. Today, Our Lady of Pompeii welcomes people of all backgrounds, continuing its legacy of faith, community, and service in the heart of Greenwich Village.
