Discover more about Punta Uvita

Punta Uvita, also known as Playa Uvita, is the primary access point to the iconic Whale's Tail Beach, located within the Marino Ballena National Park on Costa Rica's South Pacific Coast. The park itself was named for the humpback whales that migrate here seasonally to mate, typically from December to April and again from late July to early November. The geological formation of Punta Uvita is a tombolo, a sandy isthmus that connects an island to the mainland, best observed during low tide. Visitors can explore the 420 acres of the park's land and nearly 13,000 acres of protected waters. Along the way to the Whale's Tail, you'll pass the Estero Negro, an estuary with mangrove forests. The area is rich in wildlife, including pelicans, iguanas, and sometimes even dolphins and hammerhead sharks. The calm waters are ideal for swimming and snorkeling. At low tide, the tombolo reveals itself, allowing visitors to walk out on the Whale's Tail, offering panoramic views of the coastline and mountains. It's important to check tide charts before visiting, as the Whale's Tail is only accessible for a few hours each day. The park is open from 7 am to 6 pm, and there is an entrance fee. Remember to bring water and sun protection, as there is little shade on the beach.
