Discover more about Uvita Beach

Uvita Beach, part of the Marino Ballena National Park, is a captivating destination where lush rainforest meets the Pacific Ocean. Located in the Puntarenas Province of Costa Rica, Uvita is best known for the Whale's Tail, a unique sandbar formation that resembles a whale's tail and is visible during low tide. The beach's history is intertwined with the region's agricultural past, evolving from a simple fishing community to a hub for ecotourism and conservation. In the 1960s and 70s, the area faced potential disruption when ALCOA, an aluminum company, attempted to mine bauxite, but local protests successfully halted the project. The Marino Ballena National Park was established in 1990, preserving the area's biodiversity and attracting nature enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy swimming, surfing, and exploring the coastline. The park protects a diverse marine ecosystem, including coral reefs, attracting humpback whales during their migration seasons. Whale watching tours are popular, offering the chance to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat. The beach is also home to various wildlife, including monkeys, scarlet macaws, and iguanas. At low tide, visitors can walk along the Whale's Tail, discovering tide pools and enjoying panoramic views. However, caution is advised when visiting after low tide, as the currents can be strong. Playa Colonia, another section of Uvita Beach accessible through the Marino Ballena National Park, offers a less crowded alternative with good surfing waves.
