Discover more about Ruins of Cartago

The Ruins of Cartago, known locally as Las Ruinas, are more than just weathered stones; they are a poignant reminder of Cartago's rich history and the powerful forces of nature that have shaped it. Founded in 1563, Cartago was Costa Rica's first capital, and the Parroquia de Santiago Apóstol was intended to be its grandest church. Construction began in 1575, but a series of earthquakes, most notably in 1841 and 1910, left the structure in its current state of arrested decay. Today, the ruins are meticulously preserved as a historical site and public space. Visitors can stroll through the beautifully manicured gardens, where vibrant plants intertwine with the ancient stonework. The site offers a surreal, time-forgotten ambiance, inviting contemplation and photography. The ruins also carry a chilling legend of a headless priest said to wander the grounds. According to the story, the priest murdered his brother over a woman and was beheaded as punishment. Whether you believe the legend or not, the Ruins of Cartago offer a captivating glimpse into Costa Rica's colonial past and the enduring spirit of its people.
