Discover more about Parque Nacional Marino Ballena

Established in 1992, Marino Ballena National Park was created to protect the rich marine and coastal ecosystems of the Costa Ballena region. Encompassing 5,160 marine hectares and 171 terrestrial hectares, the park is a sanctuary for humpback whales that migrate to these warm waters to breed. The park's most iconic feature is the Whale's Tail, a natural rock and sand formation created by sediment deposits from the tides. Visible during low tide, this unique landform resembles a whale's tail when viewed from above. Beyond the Whale's Tail, Marino Ballena boasts a diverse range of attractions. Visitors can explore pristine beaches like Playa Uvita and Playa Ballena, swim in the calm waters, snorkel or scuba dive among vibrant coral reefs, and hike through the surrounding rainforest. The park is also home to diverse wildlife, including monkeys, sloths, scarlet macaws and various bird species. Whale watching tours are a popular activity, with humpback whales migrating from both the northern and southern hemispheres to the area. The southern migration occurs from July to October, while the northern migration takes place from December to March. The park has four official access points: Uvita, Colonia, Ballena, and Piñuela. The Uvita sector is the most popular, providing the easiest access to the Whale's Tail.
