Driving
From San José, take Route 1 north towards Alajuela. Then, follow signs for Poás Volcano National Park, typically a 1 to 1.5-hour drive. Be aware that the road can be curvy and steep as you ascend. Parking is available at the park entrance. Parking fees are not specified, so be prepared to pay a small fee. Note: As of April 2025, Poás Volcano is currently closed due to increased volcanic activity.

Public Transport
From San José, take the TUASA bus to Alajuela from Iglesia Parque de la Merced. In Alajuela, walk 200 meters south to Parque Próspero Fernández near the cemetery and catch the COOPETRANSI bus that goes directly to Poás Volcano National Park. This bus runs only on Saturdays and Sundays, departing at 9:30 AM and returning from the park at 2:00 PM. The bus trip from Alajuela to the park takes approximately 1.5 hours. The round trip bus fare from Alajuela is about 4000 CRC. Park entrance fee is $15 USD for non-residents.
