Discover more about Walls of Dubrovnik

The Walls of Dubrovnik, often called the 'Pearl of the Adriatic,' are a testament to the city's rich history and strategic importance. Constructed and reinforced between the 13th and 17th centuries, these walls served as a crucial defense mechanism, protecting the city from invaders for centuries. Today, the walls stand as one of the best-preserved medieval fortifications in the world, encircling the entire Old Town in a nearly 2-kilometer (1.2 miles). Walking along the walls provides a unique perspective on Dubrovnik's architectural beauty, with views of the terracotta rooftops, the sparkling Adriatic Sea, and the rugged coastline. The walls reach up to 25 meters (82 feet) in height and vary in thickness from 1.5 to 6 meters (5 to 20 feet), a reflection of their strategic design to withstand attacks from both land and sea. The wall complex includes the main city wall, sixteen towers, three fortresses, six bastions, two corner fortifications, three bulwarks, three moats, two flank fortresses, one breakwater, and two drawbridges. Notable structures include the Minceta Tower, the highest point of the walls, offering panoramic views, and Fort Lovrijenac, a detached fortress that is included in the ticket price. A walk along the walls offers insight into Dubrovnik's past, with each stone telling a story of resilience and ingenuity. The walls have been updated and built up to 1660 when the last Bastion of St Stephan was finished. The design of the walls was fixed between 1453 and 1667.
