Discover more about The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary

The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, dominating Dubrovnik's skyline, is more than just a religious building; it's a symbol of the city's resilience and artistic brilliance. The current Baroque cathedral was constructed between 1671 and 1713, replacing previous cathedrals on the same site, including one from the 7th century and a Romanesque basilica from the 12th century. Legend says that Richard the Lionheart, King of England, contributed funds towards the rebuilding of the cathedral as thanks for surviving a shipwreck near Lokrum Island in 1192. The cathedral's design features a three-aisled basilica with a prominent dome. The main facade boasts Corinthian columns, a large Baroque window, and statues of saints. Inside, the high nave is lined with large columns, and the intersection of the nave and transepts is crowned by a Baroque dome. The main altar showcases Titian's polyptych of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, created around 1552. The treasury displays a rich collection of relics and artworks from local, Byzantine, Venetian, and Oriental masters. Visiting the cathedral offers a glimpse into Dubrovnik's history, art, and religious traditions. The serene atmosphere and architectural grandeur provide a welcome respite from the bustling city streets. The cathedral is located near other popular attractions such as the St. Blaise Church, Rector's Palace, and Gundulić Square, making it an easy addition to any Old Town itinerary.
