Discover more about Hvar Arsenal

The Hvar Arsenal stands as a testament to the island's rich maritime history and cultural evolution. Originally constructed in the 14th century, between 1292 and 1331, it served as a maintenance shipyard for the commune's galley. Its location was strategically chosen to protect it from harsh weather and high seas, integrating it into the city's defenses. In the 16th century, the Arsenal was rebuilt, but it was soon after destroyed by the Turks in 1571. The Arsenal received its current appearance in 1611, with further additions such as the Fontik (a granary) in 1612 and the historic theatre (Hvarsko Kazalište), which opened in 1612 as well. This makes it one of the oldest public theaters in Europe. The inscription ANNO SECVNDO PACIS MDCXII (the second year of peace 1612) is engraved on the floor entrance door to its terrace. Throughout the 20th century, the ground floor served primarily as a warehouse and even housed a cinema. Today, the Arsenal is a multifunctional space used for various performances and exhibitions. The theatre on the first floor played a crucial role in Hvar's cultural life but was closed in 1996 due to safety concerns. A renovation project focused on fire safety has been undertaken to preserve this historic space. The Arsenal is a vibrant cultural center for both visitors and the local community.
