Discover more about Graniczne Meandry Odry

Graniczne Meandry Odry, or the Border Meanders of the Oder River, is a captivating natural area straddling the Polish-Czech border. This protected zone encompasses a roughly 7-kilometer stretch of the Oder River, from near the former border crossing at Chałupki to the Olza River's mouth. What makes this area special is its largely unregulated river flow, a rarity in Central Europe. The meandering river carves a scenic valley with oxbow lakes and diverse habitats. Islands, gravel banks, and steep, eroded banks create a mosaic of environments supporting a rich array of plant and animal life. The area is home to over 126 plant species and numerous endangered animal species, including rare butterflies, beetles, the European beaver, and the kingfisher. In 2009, the area was designated a Natura 2000 special habitat protection area. Visitors can explore the meanders via educational paths on both the Polish and Czech sides. A 27-meter observation tower, erected in 2018 on the Polish side, offers panoramic views of the winding river and surrounding landscape. For a different perspective, consider a kayak trip from Stary Bogumin (Czech Republic) to Zabełków. The WWF Poland and the Krzyżanowice commune have been working together since 1998 to preserve and protect the border meanders of the Oder.
