Discover more about Zřícenina hradu Velešín

Velešín Castle, now a captivating ruin, stands as a testament to medieval architecture and Bohemian history. Founded in the 13th century, likely by King Wenceslas I, it served as a royal border castle. The castle's strategic location along trade routes contributed to the growth of Velešín into an important marketplace. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by various noble families, including Čéč of Budějovice, the Lords of Michalovice, and the powerful Rosenberg family. The Rosenbergs acquired it in 1387 but abandoned and destroyed it in 1487 due to high maintenance costs. The castle's importance declined after being merged with the Nové Hrady estate. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the castle's fortifications, including a half-cylindrical bastion and a cylindrical tower, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and the Římov Reservoir. The site is freely accessible and provides a tranquil escape from bustling tourist areas. Hiking trails weave through the area, making it ideal for nature trips and leisurely walks.
