Discover more about The Gate of Holy Mother

The Gate of Holy Mother is a significant historical monument and a defining symbol of Jihlava. Constructed in the second half of the 13th century as part of the town's fortification system, it is the only remaining gate of the original five medieval entrances. Over the centuries, the gate has undergone several transformations. In the early 16th century, the original gate tower was replaced with a late Gothic structure. A Renaissance extension was added after a fire in 1551, bringing the gate to its current height of 24 meters. The gate's crown, adorned with slender cylindrical bay window motifs, gives it a distinctive appearance. Once part of a complex foregate system with a barbican, drawbridge, and bastions, the gate was renovated in 1853 and fitted with a clock. The forepartition was demolished in 1862. In 1995, structural issues led to a breach in the crown, which was subsequently dismantled and rebuilt. Today, the Gate of Holy Mother is open to the public as an observation tower. Inside, visitors can view reproductions of paintings by Gustav Krum depicting Jihlava's history, as well as an exhibition on the Jihlava Fortress. The tower offers a panoramic view of the city.
