California Theatre: A Jewel of San Jose

Experience the opulent grandeur of the California Theatre, a beautifully restored 1920s movie palace in the heart of San Jose's SoFA district.

4.7

The California Theatre, located in the SoFA (South First Area) district of San Jose, stands as one of the best-preserved examples of 1920s-era motion picture houses in the United States. Originally known as the Fox Theatre, this architectural icon was designed by Weeks and Day and opened in 1927, quickly becoming a community favorite. Hollywood stars graced its opening day, celebrating what was then considered “the finest theater in California”. Throughout its history, the California Theatre has showcased vaudeville shows, 3D films, and Cinemascope movies. After a period of change in ownership and a temporary closure in 1973, the Redevelopment Agency purchased it in 1985 to preserve the city's largest remaining downtown movie palace. A meticulous $75 million renovation, completed in 2004, restored the theater to its former glory, blending modern amenities with meticulously refurbished Jazz Age décor. Today, the California Theatre is the home of Opera San Jose and Symphony Silicon Valley, and it hosts film screenings during the annual Cinequest Film Festival. The theater's intimate setting, with only twenty rows of seats in the orchestra section, creates an engaging experience for audiences. The venue also serves as a special facility for wedding ceremonies, corporate meetings, and other private events, offering a spectacular atmosphere for any occasion.
