Santa Clara University: A Historic Jesuit Institution in Silicon Valley

Santa Clara University, a private Jesuit, Catholic university, stands as a testament to California's rich history and its vibrant present. Established in 1851 on the grounds of the Mission Santa Clara de Asís, which dates back to 1777, SCU is the oldest operating higher education institution in California. The campus beautifully integrates the Mission's architectural style, creating a unique atmosphere where history and modernity intertwine. Originally a preparatory school for boys, Santa Clara College began offering college-level courses in 1853. By 1912, with the addition of the School of Engineering and the School of Law, it officially became the University of Santa Clara. In 1961, the university broke barriers by admitting women, becoming California's first co-educational Catholic university. The institution officially adopted the name Santa Clara University in 1985.
