DuPont Environmental Education Center

The DuPont Environmental Education Center (DEEC), operated by the Delaware Nature Society, stands as a gateway to the Russell W. Peterson Urban Wildlife Refuge, a 212-acre freshwater tidal marsh. Here, the Christina River meets the city, offering a sanctuary for diverse wildlife and a place for people to connect with nature. The DEEC itself features a visitor center with stunning views, indoor and outdoor exhibits, and a boardwalk that extends into the marsh. Visitors can spot American bald eagles, wood ducks, beavers, and various reptile and plant species. The center also provides access to the 5.5-mile Markell bike/hike trail connecting Wilmington to New Castle. Established in 2009, the DEEC is a partnership between the Delaware Nature Society and the Riverfront Development Corporation. The center's location is part of an ongoing effort to revitalize Wilmington's riverfront, transforming it from an industrial area into a thriving recreational and cultural destination. The building was designed with sustainable features, including solar panels, natural lighting, and recycled materials.
