Discover more about Fort Shirley Cabrits National Park

Fort Shirley, Dominica's most important historical site, is located within Cabrits National Park, on a scenic peninsula just north of Portsmouth. Constructed by the British in 1765 and expanded during the French occupation between 1778 and 1784, the fort was a key defense in the Lesser Antilles. Housing over 600 soldiers, it served as a deterrent to attacks, particularly during the French invasions of Dominica in 1795 and 1805. The fort is known for the revolt of the 8th West India Regiment in 1802, when African slave soldiers took over the garrison, leading to the emancipation of all slave soldiers in the British Empire by 1807. The Georgian architecture, designed by Fraser and Bruce, utilized the natural defenses of the volcanic crater. Today, visitors can explore the restored Officer's Quarters, Soldiers' Barracks, Powder Magazine, and Ramparts. The site is used for events like weddings and the Jazz n' Creole Festival. Hiking trails offer panoramic views, and the park's diverse ecosystems, including coral reefs and tropical forests, provide opportunities for snorkeling, diving, and bird watching. The park also marks the northern terminus of the Waitukubuli National Trail, a 115-mile trek through Dominica's landscapes.
