Car
If you are driving from Macas, head south on the E30 highway. Follow the signs for the Parque Nacional Sangay. After approximately 40 kilometers, turn onto a dirt road leading towards Laguna Amarilla. This road can be rough, so be prepared for a bit of off-road driving. Continue for about 15 kilometers until you reach the parking area near the Laguna.
Public Transportation
From Macas, you can take a bus heading towards Sucúa. Inform the driver that you want to get off at the entrance of Parque Nacional Sangay. The bus fare is around $1.50 and the journey takes about 1 hour. Once you arrive at the entrance, you can either walk the remaining 10 kilometers to Laguna Amarilla or hire a local taxi for approximately $10 to take you directly to the lake.
Hiking
If you prefer hiking, after getting to the entrance of Parque Nacional Sangay, there is a scenic trail that leads to Laguna Amarilla. The hike is about 5 kilometers, taking approximately 2 hours depending on your pace. Make sure to carry water and snacks, and wear suitable hiking shoes.
Permits
Remember that you need a permit to access Laguna Amarilla. You can obtain this permit at the park entrance for a fee of approximately $5. It is advisable to check the official park website or inquire locally for any changes in regulations or fees.
