Walking
The final approach to Volcán Altar involves a multi-day trek. Starting from Riobamba, take a bus to Candelaria, the closest town to the park entrance. From Candelaria, check in at the Sangay National Park ranger station. The trek to the Hacienda Releche refuge, the usual base for exploring the volcano, takes approximately 4-7 hours through muddy terrain. It is highly recommended to hire a guide in Riobamba for transportation and navigation. Expect to pay around $200-$300 per person for a 3-day guided trek, including transportation, meals, accommodation at the refuge, and park entrance fees.
