Getting There

  • Public Transport

    From Tórshavn, take bus line 400 to Leirvík. The journey takes approximately 1 hour and 34 minutes. From the Leirvík bus stop, walk towards Kulibakki. The museum is located at Kulibakki 6. Bus travel is free.

  • Car

    Drive to Leirvík on Eysturoy. From the main road, take the exit towards Leirvík and follow the signs for Kulibakki. The museum is located at 6 520 Kulibakki, Leirvík. Parking is available by the football pitch in Leirvík. Driving from Tórshavn to Leirvík takes approximately 30 minutes via Route 10. Consider that you may need to pay a toll for driving through the sub-sea Norðoyatunnilin tunnel. As of July 2025, the toll is DKK 130 each way.

    Taxis are available in the Faroe Islands. Book a taxi in Tórshavn by calling +298 323232 or emailing taxi@taxi.fo. A taxi from Tórshavn to Leirvík will cost an estimated DKK 600-800.

Located in the charming village of Leirvík, the Báta- og Listasavnið, also known as the Boat and Art Museum, presents a captivating fusion of the Faroe Islands' nautical heritage and its vibrant art scene. Housed in a former fish-drying house on Leirvík Harbour, the museum showcases the vital role of the rowboat in Faroese society through displays of old Faroese boats and tools. Visitors can marvel at meticulously crafted model boats and traditional fishing vessels, gaining insight into the craftsmanship passed down through generations. The art department features a diverse collection of paintings, including works by Faroese artists Jóannis Kristiansen (1918 – 1988) and Sámal Toftanes (b. 1945). Sámal Toftanes, a Leirvík native, continues to create art today. The museum also hosts workshops and exhibitions, encouraging visitors to engage with the artistic community of the Faroe Islands. Leirvík itself is situated on the east coast of Eysturoy island and has been home to Viking settlers since the 9th century. The village was an important regional ferry harbor until the opening of the Norðoyatunnilin, a subsea tunnel to Klaksvík, in 2006.
