Discover more about Vestmanna

Vestmanna, nestled on the western coast of Streymoy, the largest island in the Faroe Islands, is a village steeped in history and natural beauty. With a population of approximately 1,200, it serves as a vital fishing hub and a popular tourist destination. The village's name, Vestmanna, translates to "Westmen's harbor," hinting at its early inhabitants, possibly Irish monks or "westmen" from the British Isles, who settled here over a thousand years ago. Vestmanna's strategic location has made it a significant harbor throughout history. Today, it is best known as the departure point for boat tours to the Vestmanna Bird Cliffs (Vestmannabjørgini), a spectacular natural attraction. These towering cliffs, rising up to 2,000 feet (609 meters) from the North Atlantic, stretch for 5 kilometers and are home to thousands of seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and fulmars. The boat tours navigate through narrow straits and grottoes, offering visitors a close-up view of the dramatic basalt formations and the thriving bird colonies. Weather permitting, the boats venture into sea caves carved by the waves, providing an unforgettable experience. Beyond the bird cliffs, Vestmanna offers other attractions, including the Saga Museum, which depicts the history of the Faroe Islands through wax figures. Visitors can also explore the surrounding mountains and lakes, some of which are located hundreds of meters above sea level. Vestmanna also has one of the earliest hydro power plants in the Faroe Islands, with rainwater collected in dams in the mountains.
