Getting There

  • Driving

    To reach Gjógv Natural Harbour by car, start from Tórshavn and take Route 10 north. Cross the Nordskala Bridge to Eysturoy and continue to Eiði. Before Eiði, turn right onto Route 62 towards Funningur and Gjógv. Follow the road into Gjógv. Parking is available at the entrance of the village. Driving from Tórshavn to Gjógv takes approximately one hour. There are no tolls.

  • Public Transport

    To get to Gjógv Natural Harbour using public transport from Tórshavn, take bus number 400 to Oyrarbakka. Then, change to bus number 201, which will take you directly to Gjógv. The bus schedules are available at www.ssl.fo. A multi-day travel card can be purchased for DKK 500 for four days of travel. A single bus fare is approximately DKK 30.

  • Walking

    If you are already in Gjógv, you can easily walk to the Gjógv Natural Harbour. From the village center, head towards the sea, following the path that leads down towards the harbour. The harbor is located in the heart of the settlement.

Gjógv Natural Harbour is a captivating attraction in the Faroe Islands, renowned for its dramatic cliffs and picturesque setting. The village of Gjógv is located on the northeast tip of Eysturoy, about 63 km north of Tórshavn. The village is named after the 200-meter-long sea-filled gorge that runs north to the sea. For centuries, the gorge has served as a natural harbor for the village's fishing boats, essential to the livelihoods of the residents. The village was first mentioned in 1584 and once had as many as 13 fishing boats sailing from its harbor. Today, visitors can descend stairs to the gorge and enjoy the sounds of the sea. Gjógv offers a tranquil escape with its colorful wooden houses and stunning views. Birdwatchers will find the cliffs home to numerous seabirds. Hikes around Gjógv provide panoramic views; a popular route leads to the sea stack Búgvin. The village church, dating from 1929, was the first in the Faroes to offer services in Faroese. A sculpture across from the church commemorates fishermen lost at sea.
